“Sempre” can be translated from Italian into English in various ways, though it always conveys a sense of steadfastness and continuity. It could mean “endless” or “forever” or it may even be translated as “still.”
I chose “Sempre” as the title for this painting because it was made with my best friend in mind. Over the past decade, our friendship has evolved and grown, even in times of separation and hardship. Through it all we have remained close, our love for one another always pulling us through to the other side.
The vase is based on bowls designed by Gio Ponti for Ginori, the famous ceramic maker based in Florence, where I first met my best friend. The two figures on the vase represent us, entangled in the chaos of life, working from the darkness towards enlightenment. The sense of disorder is continued into the tulip arrangement (inspired by Bosque Concepts), which disobeys the expected tranquility of the average floral bouquet. The colors of the vase were chosen to evoke Ancient Greek pottery and to instill a bit of timelessness in the still life.
